Week 01
You are not pregnant yet, and still this is already your first week of pregnancy! Why does this week count? So that we can calculate as accurately as possible when the baby will be born. To work out your due date as well as possible, we do not start from the moment of conception but from the first day of your last period. By adding nine months plus seven days to that, you can work out your due date yourself. This is of course still an estimate. That is why a scan is done around the 10th week of pregnancy, in which your baby is measured. Based on this, the due date may still change a little. Whether your little one will really arrive on that day remains to be seen! You may just as well give birth 3 weeks before or 2 weeks after this date.
Pregnancy and having a baby is a beautiful and life-changing event. When you decide you want to get pregnant, it is a good idea to follow a healthy lifestyle. At our practice you can even come for a preconception consultation before you are pregnant. This is useful if you want to know more about healthy and responsible eating, but also if you would like more information about certain hereditary conditions that run in your family.
When you want to get pregnant, it is important to take folic acid (0.4 milligrams a day) from the moment you stop using contraception. Folic acid reduces the chance of abnormalities of the central nervous system, such as spina bifida or a cleft lip. You should take folic acid at least up to and including your 10th week of pregnancy.
