Week 03

Conception. Your baby is now 0.1 mm.

Without you noticing a thing, a little miracle has taken place in your belly. When the sperm cell has made contact with the inside of the egg, they merge and form the first cell of your child. This cell will start dividing: first into two, then four, then eight and so on. After a week the fertilised egg will implant in the wall of the womb. You can probably hardly imagine it, but in that tiny cluster of cells of just 0.1 mm it has already been decided whether you will have a boy or a girl, and also the colour of your child’s hair and eyes and their character!

From the moment you are pregnant, a huge amount happens in your body under the influence of the pregnancy hormone hCG. Some women notice a lot of this (tender breasts, abdominal pain, nausea and/or tiredness), while others notice little of this very early pregnancy. If you have a little blood loss this week, it may be implantation bleeding. Implantation can sometimes damage a small blood vessel.
