Week 10
About the size ofa strawberry
Everything in place! Your baby is now 4.5 cm and 5 grams.
Your baby is now complete! All the organs have formed and in the coming months they will only develop further. These developments will later allow the organs to work together. It is good to know that congenital abnormalities hardly develop at all after 10 weeks. Once the organs have formed properly, not much can go wrong any more, which is a reassuring thought. The baby now has an upper and a lower jaw, which already contain twenty tiny buds that will become the milk teeth after birth. And on top of the little head, hair is even starting to grow! To grow well, your child needs nutrition, which it receives through the umbilical cord. The cord contains three blood vessels connected to the placenta. Around the cord is a thick protective layer of ‘jelly’ that makes sure these important blood vessels cannot be squeezed shut. Even if your child swims through a loop of the cord and ties a knot in it, the blood vessels are not pinched off.
