Week 33

Drawing of your baby in week 33

About the size ofa honeydew melon

Hiccups! Your baby is now 41 cm and 2000 grams.

Your belly keeps growing, and some babies now have hardly any room left to move in the womb. Until now your baby’s skin was covered with a layer of fine downy hair. Slowly but surely this is starting to disappear. Like shed skin cells and bits of vernix, the hairs end up in the amniotic fluid. It is no problem at all that the baby simply drinks it. When the stomach is too full of amniotic fluid, the contents can irritate the diaphragm so much that it contracts in a reflex. These are hiccups, and they are actually good for the development of the stomach and bowels.
